Our online sustainability report is divided into seven major areas — sourcing, products, packaging, customers, operations, employees and community. Within each of these areas , you will find our key environmental and social objectives, what we are working on, our goals and our results. We invite you to share your thoughts with us as you read about our sustainability efforts. At the bottom of every section there's an email link you can use to send us your questions, opinions and ideas.

We report in accordance with our fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30. For ease of reading, we refer to the year according to the end of the fiscal year — for example, the fiscal year ending 6/30/14 is referred to as 2014.

Frontier Co-op has been committed to doing business in an environmentally and socially responsible way since our founding in 1976, and as a growing co-op with more than 30,000 member/owners, we have a greater ability to impact the world around us each year. Our mission — “Nourish people and planet. Always be fair” — reflects our commitment to sustainability and helping communities where we do business, both at home and abroad.

In 2005, we began publicly sharing a detailed look at our sustainability efforts in an annual Sustainability Report. In 2010, we made the report more easily accessible by putting it on our website.

The Sustainability Report comprehensively describes our efforts to do business sustainably with regard to: 1) our employees' health and well being; 2) direct, non-exploitive sourcing relationships that improve the communities in which we do business; 3) other environmental and ethical aspects of sourcing, such as organics and fair trade; 4) product integrity and quality; 5) use of energy and other resources; 6) waste reduction; 7) packaging; and 8) communication with our customers, employees, growers and business associates.

The report publicly displays our setbacks as well as our accomplishments — we measure ourselves against goals of how we want things to be, and sometimes we come up short. But we feel our successes outweigh our shortcomings and that this report shows our co-op's sustainability efforts are making a difference. In any event, we will continue to be fully transparent about both our sustainability achievements and disappointments.
